Dr. Chernicoff is currently the Senior Manager of Global Research and Innovation at the Toyota Mobility Foundation. In this role, Dr. Chernicoff currently leads and established the Foundation's original research agenda, initiatives, and programs, while also providing technology guidance to various projects. With a focus on both near- and long-term perspectives, Dr. Chernicoff identifies, conceives, and executes new technology approaches that enhance the solutions implemented by the Foundation and its partners.
As a systems thinker, he proactively creates unique solutions, bringing together people and resources in new ways to help individuals, governments, and organizations achieve their full potential through mobility systems, policy, and technology solutions. His work in mobility systems focuses on enhancing transportation infrastructure, developing sustainable urban mobility solutions, and integrating advanced technologies to improve accessibility and efficiency. He has a proven track record of collaborating with various stakeholders to implement innovative mobility projects that address the evolving needs of communities and drive positive change.
He serves on the boards for Carnegie Mellon Center for Climate and Energy Decision Making, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business Open Innovation Advisory Board, and ASPIRE Center – U. Pitt DOT-University Transportation Center. Recently, appointed as the General Chair of the SAE Government Industry Meeting for 2026.
Dr. Chernicoff's background includes extensive experience in energy, technology, mobility, and climate policy, gained from previous roles as a Manager and Principal Researcher with Toyota North America's Energy & Environmental Research Group and eight years with the US Department of Transportation's Research Administration.
Additionally, Dr. Chernicoff holds appointments as an Adjunct Faculty member in the George Washington University Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, where Dr. Chernicoff teaches systems thinking, policy modeling, and program and project management. Dr. Chernicoff has also served as a visiting researcher at the M.I.T. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism.
Dr. Chernicoff's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from M.I.T., a Master of Science in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University, a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management from George Washington University, and an EMBA from the RH Smith School of Business.
In his spare time, he advises several startups and guides and mentors students through experiential learning projects.
