Daniel Hernández is an electrical engineer with over 36 years of experience in power generation, transmission, and distribution in Puerto Rico. He has led key initiatives in both the public and private sectors, including:
- Vice President of Operations at Genera PR (2023–2025): Led the stabilization of the generation fleet, the deployment of 430 MW in battery energy storage systems (BESS), and critical recovery projects.
- Director of Large-Scale Renewables at LUMA (2021–2023): Oversaw the technical and regulatory interconnection of solar and wind projects.
- Director of Generation at PREPA (2018–2021): Managed the utility’s generation fleet during major events such as the 2020 earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his career at PREPA (1989–2018), he held various technical positions, including Substation Manager and Electrical Protection Lead, promoting modernization and innovation in critical systems.
He is the founder and editor of PRET – Puerto Rico Energy Transformation, a technical platform focused on energy policy and system planning.
- Currently, he works as an independent strategic consultant, advising agencies, regulators, and developers on renewable integration, interconnection, electrical protection, and regional planning.
